Day 1 of New York Climate Week

23 September, 2024 Events ,
Day 1 of NY Climate Week

Hey everyone! Luke (CCO) here writing about  New York Climate Week! New York City's annual Climate Week has emerged as a pivotal platform for global climate action. Launched in 2009, this event brings together leaders from around the world to discuss and accelerate climate solutions. Held during the United Nations General Assembly, Climate Week offers a unique opportunity for policymakers, businesses, and NGOs to collaborate, share best practices, and announce ambitious climate commitments.

The UN General Assembly kicked off Climate Week on Saturday the 21st of September with the Summit of the Future Action Days at the UN Headquarters in New York. This event brought together a diverse group of participants: government officials, civil society leaders, business representatives, academics, local and regional authorities, youth, and more. The Action Days will serve as a platform for wide-ranging discussions and collaborations, ensuring that everyone has a voice in shaping the future.

This year 70,000 people are gathered together across New York City, with a growing number of fringe events led by global sustainability consultants, software companies and corporates. Momentum continues to turbo charge the sustainability landscape, positively bringing to the surface an ecosystem for change. This week the Rio team are meeting with existing and prospective customers, networking with partners and attending a variety of sponsored panels to understand more about those developments. It’s critical for us all to be in listening mode, but cautious that the clock is ticking and we must all take action. For those not in New York this week, The Climate Group have made today and tomorrow’s content available online here

With 6 years to go until interim targets for global decarbonisation are due under the Paris Climate Accords, the latest IPCC reports have been clear that globally we are not on track to meet the target of at least 2 degrees Celsius cap on global warming. Financial entities and corporates need calls to arm like Climate Week, to get a pulse of how the economy is feeling and the sentiment for this type of progress.

We need to see much more direct, focused and consistent collaboration between the public sector, financial services and corporates to truly accelerate on the journey to net zero.

We have a packed agenda which we’re excited about. If you’re in town and want to meet with Rio’s Commercial team, drop us a message, we will be at The Nest Tues-Thurs and fringe sponsored panels and events Monday-Friday.
